About
Suitable as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze Practice and Qualifier Expedition
An overnight sea kayaking adventure designed to allow students to work towards their Duke of
Edinburgh Award Bronze Expedition. This will be the practice and qualifier expedition where students learn the skills required for Sea Kayaking and gain skills in planning and preparing for the expedition by kayak.
Day one we will meet at Shoalwater early in the morning. (approx’ 1 hour south of Perth city). Participants will be introduced to Sea Kayaking, learn the basic skills of paddling and participate in a journey through the island chain visiting Penguin Island, Seal Island and Point Peron. There may be opportunities to go swimming/snorkelling, to walk Penguin Island trails, and you may get up-close to an Australian Sea Lion as they often swim out to the kayaks. Under expert instruction, participants will practice sea kayak rescue techniques and learn about the equipment that we use to stay safe on the water. We will spend the night under the stars in our tents at Point Peron Camp. Participants will cook their own dinner together as a group.
Day two and three is filled with teamwork as we put you through your paces and test you for your Paddle Australia Basic Skills Kayaking Award, it’s a time to utilise your new-found confidence and you may be lucky enough to paddle near a pod of the local dolphins that frequent this area. We’ll finish our paddling at a local boat ramp and debriefing and discussing the journey before being picked up by your lovely parents and caregivers.
