Prerequisites

Depending on the qualification desired several prerequisites exist in relation to qualifications and sea time.

Frequently asked Questions.

  1. Which course is best?
This depends on your experience. If you are very experienced, a good solo learner and can’t take 8 days off work, then the on line Blended learning may be for you.
In all other situations the Liveaboard courses are superior. Face to face learning with our outstanding trainers whilst at sea. Study it, then head up on deck and do it. Total immersion. This is an awesome learning experience and adventure.

  2. What do you get onboard?
Room and board. Great food. All your resources, safety equipment, daily lectures, real life experiences, Adventure, and outstanding trainers.

  3. Where do you run these courses?
We run these courses all over the coast. Summers in the southwest and winter north to the sun. Geographe Bay, Abrolhos Islands, Montebello.
All practical training for the online students takes place in Busselton.

  4. Why is it more expensive?
We feed and accommodate you onboard. Also the extra cost covers fuel and berthing.

  5. What does a typical day consist of?
We start the day fulfilling your rostered jobs. Either Engineer, Navigation, Radio and weather or cooking. We schedule a morning clean, then breakfast. We then launch into the theory and assessment of a specific unit of competency. Once complete we head off performing practical training tasks. Eg POB, Anchoring, Mooring, Navigation etc. Most night we are at anchor to get a good night’s sleep. The last 2 days are spent planning and performing a passage where you take over command and show us what you have learned.

  6. How do we get to the boat?
Travel to the boat is your responsibility. We will put you in contact with the other students on your courses and you may be able to car pool. Trans WA have affordable Bus options available.

  7. Do I leave the ship with my Coxswain’s certificate of Competency?
No, you will leave with a Course completion certificate, Completed AMPA (mandated practical assessment) and your Radio Licence (Short Range Certificate of Proficiency)
You add to these your 1st Aid certificate, AMSA medical (amsa form 1850) and your declaration of Sea Service.
Once you have collated all of the above you then apply to AMSA via the Australia Post Office using the application, AMSA form 426.

  8. What if the weather is terrible?
Starsand is a big and powerful boat, and we will tackle most weather conditions. However, we will not take undue risk and we will follow good seamanship practice. We have contingency plans if you need to be back by the set date.

  9. Who does the cooking?
Cooking at sea is part of the course and we all share the load in the galley. This can become quite competitive, and some outstanding meals are often produced.

  10. How much writing is involved?
Each day you will complete one or two written assignments to satisfy the course requirements. We tend to do these assignments in groups and share the load.

  11. What is the online course like?
The Online course is a great way to learn for some people. You require computer skills, good literacy and time.
We provide you an online package, you read a student guide then answer a series of questions to demonstrate understanding of the topic. Your answers come to us via your portal and we mark your answers and provide feedback.
This course involves 3 days of practical training in Busselton.

  12. What makes Adventure Sailing so good?
We have outstanding trainers. Trainers who are not only great mariners but also outstanding teachers. Some of our Instructors are qualified teachers with years of experience making information easy to understand.
We are all professional mariners with vast experience in many different facets of the Marine industry, including Offshore Oil and Gas, Towage, Tourism, Square rig sailing, Charter sailing, Sea Rescue and Deliveries.
We do the training at sea. You are not stuck in a classroom being bombarded by endless power points. Learn the material, step up on deck and practice the skills.
We do our training in unique locations. This makes the down time fun. Let’s squeeze in a dive or a fish.
Our courses are social. You will be onboard with a group. Sharing the learning, helping each other, over coming challenges. You will leave with a group of new friends.
Cool boats. Our vessels are ideally suited to training.
We own the company, so we try our best to accommodate your needs. You are not dealing with a large Government organisation with little interest in you as an individual.
We are efficient. We manage to complete all the training in the shortest possible time without reducing quality. We take 8 days; some Government colleges take 9 weeks.
We are all accredited AMSA assessors enabling us to complete your AMPA (mandated practical assessment) as part of your training. This is done progressively over your course. Therefore, no big final assessment. Learn the skill, demonstrate competence, get ticked off.
We believe we have developed an outstanding training course. Your confidence and knowledge will soar. You will leave the ship ready to competently take command.
