About

This is a living History event set in 1786 where Folsom Tavern will be full of reenactors in costume portraying the different sides of the Paper Money debate in the months after the "paper money riot". You are welcome to walk through the tavern at your leisure and hear from people with different viewpoints on topics like: the war, debt and currency, and who should make laws for the new land.

The three sides represented will be:

  1. Exeter Politicians and big wigs. These are the former officers from the Rev War who are now decision makers in the state. Some of them were trapped in the meetinghouse on the day of the "riot". They will talk about why taxes must be collected and the printing of paper money will not solve problems.

  2. Farmers from the surrounding towns. These former soldiers (see the veterans connection?) returned from years of war to their farms in rough shape and very little in the way of pay for their years of service. They now have debts due, taxes rising, and no way to pay them because there is not enough silver or paper currency with which to pay. Some of them were participants in the (non-violent) "riot" on September 20th and now wait to hear about the trial of their leaders.

  3. Locals, the Folsoms, and other non-participants. Who may not have a set opinion, and are just trying to conduct business, go about their daily lives, etc.

You will be greeted and given an orientation so you can better understand the conversation(s) taking place throughout the day.
