Training Session: Fails & Fixes 1

584 4th Street San Francisco, CA 94107

Failure to plan is planning to fail...

TRAINING COSTS:

  • $150 per person

2 person minimum. If minimum participation is not met, the module will be cancelled and you can either be bumped to the next scheduled event, or refunded

OBJECTIVE:
We hope that you perform thorough equipment checks every time you set up your SCUBA gear in order to prevent issues from occurring on your dive. But even the best checks cannot uncover every problem that may happen while underwater, and most divers do not set aside dive time to drill the skills that might save yourself or a teammate from an incident.
This is that opportunity to really drill down into the 'what-ifs' that we all wonder about from time to time, and increase confidence in your ability to be a strong diving teammate when things are not going according to plan, and you need to salvage the situation as you end the dive and return safely to the surface.

DURATION:

  • 1 hour Classroom
  • 2 hour Pool

SCHEDULE:

  • 6PM - 9PM

TECHNIQUES/SKILLS:

  • Review of proper weighting

  • BC Fails:
    -Runaway Inflation
    -Dump valve/puncture
    -Loose corrugated hose
    -Using SMB as BC/floatation device
    -Deploying SMB underwater

  • Weight pocket/belt slip/drop
    -(Individual effort)
    -(Team effort)

  • Tank slip and replace
    -Buddy Skill
-Remove & Replace BC (why impractical)

  • Drysuit Fails:
    -Runaway Inflator
    -Jammed dump valve
    -Catastrophic flood

In the classroom we review the risks, and review the importance of gas management and dive planning, as well as execution. We will also review additional gear that we either must bring with us or should consider to deal with problems we might encounter at depth and discuss various solutions to gear failures.
With that in mind, we will experiment and practice dealing with some of those failures in the pool to gain a greater understanding of our skills and gain experience and therefore confidence.
