Low Tide Harbour Tour (Paddle + Walk)
Explore the Harbour • Ride the Tide • Experience Secret Wild Norfolk • All levels
Heading out on the ebbing tide to explore the normally unseen Norfolk natural coast and harbour, before riding the tide back in.
The tour will involve paddling and walking out through shallow creeks, with our boards to explore deeper and further in the most beautiful, picturesque, wild Norfolk natural scenery. Before meeting the deeper water and the sea for a swim, some wildlife spotting or a little break on the sand bars. Then experience the thrill of having the tide rush in, pick you up and carry you home :-)
Pre -requisites
We will cover all the essential skills, but you will need a small amount of fitness and a love of being outdoors; this is a true SUP explore and involves portage (carry & walk) faster flowing water, still water, shallow water, deep water, technical manoeuvring (easy to pick up and we’re there to coach and guide ) and use of board trim, and being right out in nature :)
What will the session include
Whilst the sessions will depend on the group and conditions on the day, being tailored to the individual and group needs, things covered include:
Essential skills
1) Water safety briefing
2) Paddling kneeling down
3) Paddling standing up
4) Basic paddling – forwards, backwards and turning
5) Launching safely
6) Self rescue techniques
7) Local knowledge - top tips and safety measures for NW Norfolk's coast
8) Action plan for further paddling (where can you go, what can you do next!)
9) Small group sizes - max 6 per instruction
Beacuse of the design of the tour, there is such a wonderful opportunity to really experience the tides, we will cover a fair bit of what tides are, how to predict them, their strength, what impacts them and how to deal with them, tidal eddies, etc
If you have mastered the basics we will move on - small groups mean easy tailoring and then we will cover
- step back turns, cross bow turns
- feathering the paddle
- board trim or speed & racing
- waves & surfing
- towing
- emergency safety and rescues
- we can keep going.. on and on.. we have a ton of love, knowledge and enthusiasm to share and will do so :-) (expect also, random wildlife facts and general nature chat.. )
What to bring
Please wear clothing suitable for getting wet! This can be a wetsuit if you have one, or active wear and layers.
Bare feet are fine, but plimsolls / water shoes are also good and provide a little extra protection from stones and shells!
Please bring water as a 'must' and a snack as a 'nice to have'.
Sunscreen - a must!
Hat / sunnies - a good idea weather dependent. If you are going to wear sunglasses, a strap is ESSENTIAL - they come flying off when anyone falls in
A waterproof bag is a good idea (amazon has a selection of great and cheap dry sacks with a shoulder strap) As these will enable you to carry a spare jumper / jacket incase you get chilly, and your water / snacks etc.
We don't advise bringing phones and valuables as dropping them in the sea makes very sad faces - and we hate that. But if you do wish to take pictures, please make sure that you have appropriate waterproof cases, bags leashes etc. There is a likelihood of you getting wet, and your valuables need to stay dry.
Post session, you are likely to need a towel, something to change into in case you are wet, and maybe a drink and some food!
Is this suitable for my chld?
The age is set at 7+yrs, It is quite an adventurous activity - walking and paddling, dragging boards, hopping on, hopping off, navigating mini rapids, avoiding sand banks ( sometimes crashing and taking a tumble and picking yourself up, dragging the board round and going again) , and some children just love it - regardless of age and some don't. So we would say that this is a parental call - does your child love the outdoors, are they water babies, tree climbers, rock poolers, adventure addicts.. Then they will probably love it. However, if, being honest, they would rather be on a playstation, dislike doing PE, and generally a little reluctant or timid outdoors, it might not be that fun for them - The fun and. games and shorter distances of a family taster tour would be better in this instance.
