Cast Net Throwing Class- September 25, 2025 - 5:30-6:30pm
Cast nets are a favorite tool for recreational fishing thanks to their effectiveness in catching live bait. But here in the South Carolina Lowcountry, cast netting is more than just a fishing method — it's a tradition deeply rooted in the Gullah Geechee culture and the region's coastal heritage.
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll learn how to throw and open a cast net with ease, no matter your experience level. You'll practice with different net sizes and gain the skills to use them confidently. Whether you're here to learn a useful skill or simply try something new, this class is for you.
We’ll be practicing in the field, and no fishing license is required for the workshop itself. However, if you'd like to test your skills from the dock afterward, please have a paper or digital copy of a valid South Carolina fishing license.
Ages 13 and older only please.
October 2, 2025 Indigo Exploration – Tote and T-shirt Edition 5:30-6:30pm
Travel back in time and "meet" Eliza Lucas Pinckney, a pioneering young woman whose experiments with indigo in 1739—at just 17 years old—helped turn the crop into a thriving industry in colonial South Carolina. Discover her remarkable story, learn how indigo dye was traditionally made, and create your own indigo tie-dye t-shirt and tote bag to take home.
The Museum will provide one t-shirt (available in sizes Child S – Adult XXL) and one tote bag per participant. You’re also welcome to bring one additional small cotton item to dye using authentic indigo derived from our region’s historic “cash crop.”
