FAQs
Why can’t I reserve a rental for today!?
We don’t offer same day pick up, so just reserve for tomorrow and your gear will be in the shed at midnight!
Are there any other rental companies in the area?
The Yosemite Conservancy rents gear and REI does as well!
Do you offer any discounts?
Not really—but you’ll notice that rentals get cheaper the longer you rent them!
When can I pick up my rental?
Anytime! We have created a system that allows you to access them at whatever time is convenient for you!
- All rentals start at midnight on the first day of your rental period.
- Our Rental Shed is accessible 24/7 during your rental, so you can pick up and drop off at any time.
Where is the Rental Shed?
Our Rental Shed is to the left of our front door at the end of the sidewalk. It has a fully automated door and is under 24-hour surveillance. Your gear will be waiting for you inside—just follow the access instructions in your confirmation email.
I need to pick up my rental a day early due to my travel plans. Do I have to pay for an extra day?
Yes, your rental charge is based on your pickup and drop-off times. If you need to pick up early or return late, you’ll be charged for the additional time.
I only want to rent a tent. Do I have to rent the whole camp kit?
Yes, the full kit must be rented—we do not break apart kits or rent items that are not listed individually.
- However, individual items are available for sale at Yosemite Basecamp! Call ahead for pricing and availability.
- If you don’t want to carry or use certain items from your kit, you’re welcome to leave them in the Rental Shed for the duration of your rental.
What if something is missing or not working when I get to my campsite?
- Check your gear before leaving the Rental Shed! We are not responsible for items accidentally left behind.
- Test and inspect everything before your adventure begins, even if it's new, used, rented, or your own.
- If something isn’t working, call us immediately! We can help troubleshoot, provide instructions, or arrange a replacement if needed.
- We cannot refund rentals for issues that weren’t reported at pickup. Additionally, if you continue using damaged gear without notifying us, you may be charged for repairs or replacements.
Can I get a refund if I didn’t use my rental?
We charge based on your pickup and drop-off times, not usage. However, if you return your rental early, let us know—we may be able to issue a partial refund.
Why do some of my rentals require a $250 Hold and what is that!?
The credit card hold is placed for high value items. This is not a charge and will be automatically released after 7 days if everything is returned in good shape.
- You can always request an expedited release within 24 hours after returning your gear.
What if I accidentally damage my rental?
Honesty is the best policy and, besides, you don't want negative Gear Karma!
- Tell us about the damage as soon as possible - it helps us repair the item before the next guest.
- If we know about an issue in advance, we can often fix it at a lower cost to you. For example, if we catch a small tent tear early, we can patch and seal it instead of charging for a full replacement.
- If damage is discovered during our post-rental inspection and we don’t have time to fix it before the next rental, you could be charged a full replacement fee.
- If the fix is easy enough or if it is normal wear and tear, then you may not be charged anything!
What if I need to extend my rental?
Give us a call as soon as possible! If the gear isn’t reserved for someone else, we can extend your rental and adjust your payment accordingly.
Do you offer delivery or pickup services?
Not at this time! We do offer 24 hour access to our Gear Shed, so you can grab what you need when you need it!
What if I need to cancel my rental?
Then go ahead and cancel! We won't charge you any fees to cancel 24 hours before your rental. If you need to cancel within 24 hours, then you will be charged the first day rental or 50% whichever is less.
Are there any late fees?
No, just the additional rental price. Do note that we will never charge you more than the item(s) is/are worth to replace. It is a total pain in the ass to replace stuff though, so please just bring it back!
Is the gear cleaned between rentals?
Absolutely! Each item gets a full reset! Do note, that our rental reset area is outside, so you may still find a little dirt, dust or grass on the bottom of your tent, but we promise it’s our dirt!
Can I take rental gear outside of Yosemite?
Yeah man, go forth and explore! Just get it back when you say you will so we don’t need to worry about you!
What happens if I don’t return my rentals?
We take several steps to confirm that you picked up your rental. If your gear is not returned:
- We will attempt to contact you.
- You will continue to be charged for each day the rental is overdue.
- If we cannot reach you and the gear is not returned, we will call the authorities.
- If necessary, we will file theft charges—though, fun fact, we once saved a lost guest through this process!
What happens if I lose a rental item?
We’re gonna charge you for the full price replacement. HOWEVER, if you find it, let us know and we may be able to get you refund if you send it back!
What is this extra fees business?
Our booking platform charges you 6% to book online. If you want to avoid that, then just call and book with us over the phone!
Cancellations
Same day cancellations and no-shows of advance bike rentals will result in a $25.00 fee.
