The Ale Trail is a self-guided biking adventure designed for those who love scenic rides, local brews, and a touch of adventure. Customers can expect a fun, flexible, and well-planned day, riding through one of Central Otago’s most stunning landscapes and stopping at iconic local breweries along the way. Ideal for riders of all abilities, this tour offers the perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and a taste of local culture.
What can customers expect?
- Convenient Pickup: Your experience begins at 10:00 AM with a pickup from the Pig and Whistle in Queenstown. Alternatively, for a small extra fee, you can opt for a door-to-door service with pickup scheduled approximately 5-10 minutes later from your accommodation. We'll confirm the exact time via text to ensure a smooth start.
- Arrowtown Arrival & Briefing: By 10:30 AM, you'll arrive in the historic town of Arrowtown. After a quick briefing between 10:30 and 10:45 AM, you're free to explore.
- Pre-Ride Beer Stop: Kick off your adventure with a beer at The Dishery one of Arrowtown’s most popular brunch spots. from 11:00 AM. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere and fuel up for your ride.
- Self-Guided Bike Ride: At 11:45 AM, set off on a scenic 1.5 to 2-hour ride along the 16 km Wharehuanui trail. Take in the breathtaking views of the Whakatipu Basin as you ride at your own pace. Maps, helmets, and support via text will be provided to ensure a smooth experience.
- Gantley’s Tavern Stop: Around 1:15 PM, you’ll arrive at Gantley’s Tavern, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy a refreshing drink or a bite.
- Canyon Brewery Visit: For those looking to extend their adventure, continue to Canyon Brewery a further 2 kms arriving at 2 PM. Here, you can relax and take in the alpine views while enjoying $20 tasting paddles, but if you’re planning to enjoy food, pre-booking is usually required. Shared dining options start at $35pp.
- Searchlight Brewery: For the hardcore adventurers wanting to tick every brewery off the list, head 4 km more to Searchlight Brewery arriving at 2:50 PM.
End-of-Trail Options & Return shuttle pick-up: You can finish your ride at:

Searchlight Brewery 3:10 - 3:15 PM or
Queenstown Gardens Entrance (16 Park Street). No shuttle return for this option—lock up bikes by 4:30 PM and walk into town.
