Guided Tour - Key Largo Dolphin Encounter
Weekends • 3/4 Day Trip • 10:30am-6:30pm
Overview
Activity details
- This tour includes a delicious Keys lunch at a bayside restaurant and a captive dolphin encounter in Key Largo.
- There are three types of dolphin encounters guests can choose from: (1) The Dockside Encounter where you'll be able to interact with the dolphin without getting in the water. (2) There is the Shallow Water Encounter where you stand in waist high water and interact with a dolphin. (3) And there is the Signature Swim Encounter where you can swim in deeper water with a dolphin and experience more fast paced interactions as in dolphin dorsal tows.
- The group will go through an educational briefing then have up to 30 minutes to interact with the dolphins (times may vary depending on dolphins’ behavior and some interactions per person may be limited due to group sizes).
- You will enjoy seeing the natural lagoon the dolphins are in as it's not a man made pool. It is directly attached to the Florida Bay separated by a fence. The lagoon experiences the natural water and tidal changes of the bay. The facility is also a rescue for wild marine animals. You can feel the love the staff has for marine wildlife and that they are geared towards conservation.
- The facility is nice and clean with restroom access in two locations on the property.
- There is a gift shop that has nice quality shirts with the actual photo of the particular dolphin you had an encounter with.
- There is an ice cream cooler and soda vending machine.
- During the encounter, they have an employee photographer that takes photos of the experience. After the encounter, you have the option of purchasing a photo package for around $89. Otherwise, a spectator may stand behind the participants and take photos for free.
- When you first arrive, you will be fitted with a life jacket and will sit and listen to an educational instructional presentation. After the presentation, the handlers then escort the group to where each type of encounter takes place.
- The Shallow Water Encounter takes place on a platform that lowers the group into the water. The sessions are not timed as they are based on dolphin time and if they are cooperating. They want to make sure that each participant experiences the same encounter. Participants will be able to pet the dolphin on the tail and belly in a few different sessions, you will be able to kiss the dolphin, be splashed by the dolphin, and also give it some commands.
- The Swimming Encounter is in deeper water. Those participants will have to be avid swimmers as they will be treading water for up to 15 minutes. That encounter is where you swim and are towed by the dolphin.
- After the encounter, participants can use an open shower to rinse off and change. The trainers accept gratuities for the experience.
- From there you will have a 15-30 minute behind-the-scenes tour of the facility followed by a chance to visit the gift shop and purchase their photo package.
