Be sure to inform King's Landing Education staff if they are more susceptible to overheating or sun exposure. We will make sure to check on them frequently.
Overview
Activity details
Visiting Cousins and Family Kin are our week-long overnight camp programs.
As part of Visiting Cousins, Family Kin, and Cousin for a Day, children have the chance to roll up their sleeves and experience 19th-century life first-hand!
Each day starts early with baking, laundry, foraging, or gardening with the Education Team. Then, campers enter the site to work alongside local tradesmen, artisans, and entertainers and attend our one-room schoolhouse. Campers dress in period costume and get in on as many activities as possible!
As the sun sets, the entertainment continues with games, songs and drama. Visiting Cousins and Family Kin make lasting friendships and have so much fun experiencing the history that they don’t even realize they’re learning.

FAQs
Sleepover: Does my child have to stay overnight to be a Visiting Cousin?
No! This year, the Visiting Cousins and Cousins for the Day (formerly Day Camp) programs are much more integrated, with Cousins for the Day arriving at breakfast and leaving at supper. This means if your child wants to participate without sleeping over, they can register for Cousins for the Day instead. They will miss the evening activities but will be able to enjoy the full day at work and play with the Visiting Cousins.
Location: Where will my child stay?
The participants of the Visiting Cousins Program will be staying in our newly renovated Slipp House on site at King’s Landing. The Slipp house has been outfitted with modern showers and washroom facilities, and fire protection. There are four bedrooms for participants on the upper level, and an office on the main floor for staff to keep the night watch.
Staff: Who are the staff?
Our Education Team is made up of 9 Education Staff, 2 cooks, the Education Supervisor, and the Education Coordinator. Throughout the day, the Visiting Cousins participants will visit other site staff who will teach them traditional skills and host them for lunch. All staff involved with the Visiting Cousins program are required to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check. Your child will never be alone, nor alone with an adult.
Food: What will they eat?
All food will be prepared by our Education cook at the Learning Center next to the Slipp house, which is our meal hall. Lunches will be prepared in the food safe kitchen and served in the houses by site staff. They will be made aware of any allergies a week ahead of your child’s arrival so they can be prepared.
Costume and Sleepwear: What will they wear?
Part of the fun of being a Visiting Cousin is getting to dress in period appropriate attire. Visiting Cousins will choose at the beginning of the week if they will play the role of a 19th century boy or girl, then they will be fitted for their costumes. Participants will be provided with two costumes, one for the first half of the week, the other for the second. These costumes are the property of King’s Landing and are to be returned at the end of the week.
Participants may also order 19th century sleepwear if they like. This is theirs to keep.
Guardians: Can I visit my child while they are in the village?
If you wish to see your child while they are at camp, you must buy an entrance ticket to visit the village, with the exception of Friday afternoon. Guardians of overnight campers are welcome to enter the village free of charge beginning at noon on the Friday of their child’s week at camp, to visit the village and see their child interacting with their new friends. There will be an opportunity to take pictures with your child after the variety show. Before the show, we kindly ask that you please keep your distance, and not approach the campers or try to get their attention while they are doing activities or moving from place to place. Our staff don’t know every guardian’s face by heart and are trying to keep the campers going from one place to another in a safe and orderly fashion. Each week any candid photos from the previous week are shared in a google drive to the guardians of that week’s campers.
More details to come
Once your child is registered, a packing list and pickup/ drop off details will be sent to you via email. Two weeks before your child’s camp date, you will receive an email link you and your child can use to pick their preferred activities for the week of their visit.
