About the Band

Music with a spirit of beauty, spontaneity, dance, and jazz improvisation!

From the city where the sun shines through the mist, Temecula, California, comes the jazzy folk duo Nathan & Jessie.

Born of the individuals, Nathan Rivera and Jessie Andra Smith, this duo is a unique blend of jazzy folk and blues on resonator guitars and accordion, along with interesting interplay between male and female vocals. Often joined on tour and on recordings by their friends, Trevor Mulvey on Upright Bass, and Blake Armstrong on Drums.

Their performances not only include unique all original music, but stories of their travels and interaction with the audience that make for an unforgettable experience. Love of sharing music has taken Nathan & Jessie all over the world, frequenting places like Mexico, Canada, France, New Orleans, and the Pacific Northwest.

The upbeat tunes they write reflect the cultural, emotional, and inspirational images of their life experience and are rooted in the spirit of jazz, improvisation, storytelling, language, and humor.

Local Ground presents: Kelly Shively & Melissa Welke
Kelly Shively is a small-town girl who grew up on the family farm in Petoskey Michigan. Her musical interest was kindled by a father who sang nonsensical improv songs daily, a Grandma who roped her into the church choir, and piano lessons at the age of nine.

She didn’t allow herself to explore her musicality until her three daughters were mostly raised, but since then, she has begun to sing the songs of her heart, written about and centering on her
family and faith. She strives to be the voice of hope, healing and encouragement to those who come to see her perform.

Melissa Welke has been singing and writing songs for several years. Performing at such venues as Blissfest Music Festival, Mackinaw City Outdoor Amphitheater, Boyne City Strolling the Streets, Harbor Springs Street Musique, Charlevoix Area Library Folk Music Series, Alliance of the Arts Farmers Market and numerous other private gigs she aims to project a positive attitude in her music.

While wintering in Florida she found the ACMA, and has performed at many shows. Melissa always leaves the listener walking away feeling inspired.
