Full Moon Floatilla
Minneapolis Chain of Lakes
A serene evening paddle on the most scenic lakes in the city.
*Actual moon size may vary
Duration
Approx. 2 hours depending on light
Come for the twilight. Stay for the moonlight.
This monthly kayak tour will start in the golden hours of the day, as the other boaters and beachgoers begin to head home. Working our way from Thomas Beach on the south shore of Bde Maka Ska, we'll navigate the channel to Lake of the Isles as the moon takes over the sky and get opportunities to view the nocturnal wildlife.
Names matter: This lake was once the site of a Dakota village, and its recently reinstated name reflects their title for it, which was essentially 'white earth lake.' “Bde” means “lake,” “Maka” means “earth" or "bank" and “Ska” means “white." Coincidentally, this village was also the location where the Dakota language was first translated into the English alphabet.
Additional Info
- Glow it up: Guests are encouraged to bring headlamps for visibility at the end of the paddle - bonus points for any fun colored lights or camping lanterns (water-resistant advised)
- Dress for water! Wear lightweight clothing that you wouldn’t mind getting wet - hot tip, have a dry layer in your car to change into after just in case.
- Hats and sunglasses for the glare off the water
- Sunscreen/Water bottle - guides should have extra, but we encourage use of a reusable water bottle to lessen reliance on single-use plastics.
- Snacks for your guide - just kidding, but never a bad idea for yourself
- We will have a dry bag for anything small that you don't want to get wet; we take pictures with a waterproof camera, so you don't have to risk yours!
Please plan to arrive to the park at least 10 minutes prior to the tour start time.
