Tour Description

Traveling through time is posible! This tour provides more than enough knowledge to ignite the spark of imagination. How did people from the 1800s manage to mine gold and silver in an inhospitable land? What did they use? This exceptional hike takes you searching for clues to the past as you walk along a smooth dry river bed made magical by the large boulders you will see throughout your hike across one of the most representative and impressive canyons of the region that shows us not only an amazing assortment of flora but part of our surprisingly extensive mining history! Wonder about all the stories your guide will share as you wander to our Rancho Las Canoas, our mid hike resting place where you will enjoy a delicious lunch lovingly prepared by our house chef Iván, whose passion can truly be tasted!

On the way back, we have a unique opportunity to visit and relive the history contained in a building from the 1800s where the mining magic used to happen. As your guide explains, let your mind wander and picture all the lengthy and complicated procedures that used to be done in order to retrieve a small amount of silver and gold from our land. Ask your guide about the purpose of water, acids and other rocks during the process. Marvel at the simple way of life the locals had while not at work. Can you imagine yourself living there? Getting large chunks of rock just to break them apart, getting involved in a dangerous procedure just for the chance to retrieve some fine metal? What would you do after work? Visit the huge cardón at the back and try to find a hidden machete and other trinkets! How do you reckon they got there?

After our break it's time to hike back, focusing on the other side of the canyon, where your guide will share with you important plant uses and other information about the flora and fauna you will see here! We will also share with you our passion, hard work and thought put into our erosion control and watershed management programs! This tour also allows you to visit one of our efforts to prevent erosion and try to keep the water from being wasted and instead going into the aquifer where the local communities get their freshwater.
