About
The American Mountain Guides (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor Course is the first in the sequence of climbing instructor and guide training programs. This is a great way to transition from a capable recreational climber to an effective climbing instructor. The SPI course is intended for recreational climbers who are already proficient in both top-rope and lead climbing. Since 2008 Red River Adventures has constantly provided the very best in Single Pitch Instruction to students.
Why Choose Red River for SPI training?
- RRA has been providing Single Pitch Instructor training longer than any other Utah guide service
- We are local with locations in both Moab and Salt Lake City
- Utah's oldest SPI provider!
- IFMGA or Rock certified lead Instructors
Course Pre-Requisites
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a genuine interest in rock climbing and instructing novices on single pitch crags
- You have at least 12 months of prior climbing experience
- You are an active climber with traditional lead climbing experience
- Have trad lead climbed a minimum of 15 graded rock climbing routes (any grade)
- Are capable of comfortably climbing 5.8 while on a top rope
The pre-requisites listed above are absolute minimums and most candidates have skills in excess of the above. Without having at least this amount of experience you are unlikely to play a constructive part in the course or be able to make the best use of the training. If you are unsure of your skill level we suggest a day with one of our Certified Single Pitch Instructors to evaluate and enhance your skills and experience prior to SPI Program enrollment.

FAQs
Tipping
A note on tipping!
Some of our guests are unsure of the etiquette for gratuities for guides.
Your guides will work hard to ensure your trip is memorable, safe and fun. They are skilled outdoor professionals who will educate, entertain, manage risk, and strive to provide a great experience. If they meet or surpass your expectations, please consider a gratuity!
In the U.S., guidelines are similar to a restaurant (15-20%), but as we like to say on the river, "you can always tip over, but you can never over tip!"
