Crew Sails

St. Augustine, FL

Starting at $275 pp

Sail Times:

As a Crew Member, sailors can join our weekly Crew Sails every Sunday (10AM - 1:00PM or 1:00PM -4:00PM) - twice a month.

Here are a few things to keep in mind about the crew program:

During the sail, you will have either a USCG Captain or an ASA Sailing Instructor aboard to provide instruction as each participant takes their turn performing the scheduled lesson.

Each individual will receive a Membership Number that will allow them to sign up for 2 sails a month during the calendar month the membership is active.

Our CREW Plus membership provides the crew addtional time on the water by way of joining as crew on our paid charters where you will be able to put your sailing skills to work. The captain will be required to handle the vessel leaving and coming back to the dock or at any other time the captain feels it is reqiured for safety. This additional membership option does require the crew person to participate in St Augustine Sailing's drug consortium. That does require an annual fee of $90 paid to the third party agency assigned to handle the consortium.

Short Availabilty

There are also opportunities to gain extras sails during the calendar month. 40 Hours prior to the Sunday sails and there is space available, crew can secure their spot by entering their crew membership number.

What to bring and know:

1 - Dress for the onditions and come prepared with the proper gear for the conditions.
* You always want to have sunscreen and sunglasses (preferably polarized), and perhaps a hat.
* Foul-weather gear with you as the weather in Florida can turn very quickly.
* In winter and spring, the water temperature is much cooler whith means the winds - and rains - can be especially harsh. Dress in layers that can be esily shed if the day turns warmer.

2 - Invest in a Type V PFD: Suggested for all sailors. For those who want to participate in offshore racing, we particularly recommend a Type V PFD with a tether.

3 - Practice those knots!. Here are a few to focus on:
* Bowline
* Clove hitch
* Cleat hitch
* Figure 8

4 - Know your sailing terminology for effective communication among captain and crew. Review your ASA 101 textbook. If you can't find yours, we have them available in the office.

5 - Be very familar with the Navigation Rules (feference that ASA 101 textbook again) and Aids to Navigation (ATON).

6 - Don't forget to log your hours either in your ASA 101 Logbook or one you purchase elsewhere.
