50th Birthday Excursions

Wellington Railway Station

12th June - Wellington to Woodville via the Kapiti Coast or the Wairarapa

Celebrating 50 years

To celebrate our 50 years of heritage rail we are offering members, past members and the public to join us for a day trip from Wellington to Woodville and return. We are using all our locomotives and carriages and offering four options for the day.
On departing Wellington both trains will run alongside each other on the Up lines before parting company north of Kaiwharawhara.
Both trains are timetable for similar arrivals into Woodville. During the 75 minute lunch stop at Woodville the trains will be turned and serviced ready for their return journeys. The lovely people from the Woodville Station Trust have kindly agreed to provide support during the stop over time with some food and craft stalls showcasing local produce and crafts set up at the recently renovated station. Please note that stalls vary with each visit depending on the availability of the artisans. There will be photo opportunities at Woodville before boarding for the return trips to Wellington.

The Birthday Programme.

Option 1: The Bush Rambler:
With our restored diesels DA1410 and DA1431 leading the way heads out of Wellington for the Hutt Valley and through the Remutaka tunnel to the Wairarapa. Departing Masterton we will be on the freight only line through to Woodville. You will be travelling in our 1930s restored carriages including a Buffet Car. The Bush Rambler will return down through the Wairarapa to the Hutt Valley and Wellington.

Option 2: The Coastal:
Steam locomotives JA1271 and AB608 will lead our 1900s wooden carriages up the NIMT to Shannon for a water and service stop. Then it is on to Palmerston North before heading through the spectacular Manawatu Gorge to Woodville. After a lunch break The Coastal will return through the Manawatu Gorge to Palmerston North and then down the Kapiti Coast to Otaki for a water and service stop before continuing to Wellington.

Option 3: The Scenic Loop:
Leave Wellington watching the Steam dance in the morning sun on “The Coastal” as we make our way north via the Kapiti Coast, through the Manawatu to Woodville where you will change trains and get to explore the forgotten trackage of the northern Wairarapa line for your return journey to Wellington on our diesel hauled “Bush Rambler”

Option 4: The All-Rounder:
As the name implies if you want a taste of it all this is the tour for you! Begin your morning on the “Bush Rambler” hauled by our lovingly restored Diesel electric locomotives where you can listen to their thunder bounce off the hills in the Hutt valley, through the tunnel and up into the gorgeous Wairarapa on our way to Woodville where you will change trains. Jumping on “The Coastal” for its southbound excursion back to wellington via the Manawatu will give you an opportunity to take it easy and watch the sunset from your seat as we let our steam engines do the work!

Notes

All trains begin in wellington (with the option to board and alight at intermediate stations) for their return trip to Woodville however if you book on either "The Senic loop" or "The All-Rounder" these services are doing a full loop and they will not return to the same intermediate boarding stations, if you boarded at an intermediate station. you will need to organise your own transport from wellington station back to these locations

If your joining the train in Wellington there is no need to worry as all trains return here at the end of the day!

If you have any questions or not sure or the route please do not hesitate to contact us at "bookings@steaminc.org.nz" or call us on "0800 STEAMINC"
