Want to explore Whanganui at your own pace?
Our Modern and Retro cruiser bikes are a great way to explore our city. From the historic village of Upokongaro to the coast, Whanganui has plenty on offer.
Cycling from Upokongaro to Whanganui offers a scenic and enjoyable ride along the Mountains to Sea Trail. The route takes you through picturesque rural landscapes alongside the Whanganui River, offering beautiful views as you pass through quiet neighborhoods and historical areas.
The journey begins in Upokongaro, where you'll cross the 130m cycle bridge that connects to the trail along Papaiti Road. As you cycle toward Whanganui, you'll pass notable landmarks such as the Dublin Street Bridge and sculptures along the riverbank, including the giant HB pencils and the From the Mountain to the Sea sculpture. If you're riding on a Saturday, you'll pass by the vibrant Whanganui River Markets, a great place to stop for local crafts and food.
Once you reach the city center, there's plenty to explore, from heritage architecture to street art and boutique shops. For a unique experience, you can head over the river and take the Durie Hill Elevator for panoramic views of the city and river. If you're up for a detour, you can ride to Castlecliff Beach at the Tasman Sea, where the trail ends at North Mole, a driftwood-strewn beach that offers a dramatic end to your journey.
