Blackisle
Welcome to an unforgettable journey through the Black Isle, a hidden gem of the Scottish Highlands filled with history, legends, and incredible wildlife. Despite its name, the Black Isle is not actually an island, but a stunning peninsula boasting rolling countryside, charming villages, and breathtaking coastal views. Let’s set off on an adventure to explore its rich past and natural wonders.
We begin our tour in Inverness, the vibrant capital of the Highlands, before crossing the Kessock Bridge into the Black Isle. Our first stop is the Clootie Well at Munlochy, a fascinating and mystical place steeped in ancient Celtic traditions. Here, you’ll find trees adorned with cloth offerings left by visitors seeking healing and good fortune—one of Scotland’s most mystical sights.
Next, we make our way to Fortrose Cathedral, a stunning 13th-century ruin that was once a grand religious centre. With its striking red sandstone walls and Gothic arches, this site tells the story of the medieval bishops of Ross who once held great power in the region.
From Fortrose, we travel to Chanonry Point, one of the best places in Scotland to spot wild dolphins. This narrow headland offers spectacular views over the Moray Firth, and if we’re lucky, we’ll witness the famous bottlenose dolphins leaping through the waves—an experience you won’t soon forget!
A short drive takes us to Rosemarkie, home to a fascinating Pictish past. We’ll visit Groam House Museum, where you can see intricately carved Pictish stones and learn about the ancient people who once ruled these lands. Their symbols and artistry remain a mystery, but they offer a unique glimpse into Scotland’s deep history.
Continuing along the coast, we arrive in Cromarty, a charming historic town at the tip of the peninsula. Here, we’ll visit the Hugh Miller Museum, dedicated to the famous geologist, writer, and folklorist who grew up in this very town. Step into the life of this remarkable Highlander and discover his contributions to science and storytelling.
Our final stop is the Cromarty Courthouse, an 18th-century courtroom where you can step back in time and experience a dramatic re-enactment of local trials from centuries past. With its period furnishings and atmospheric setting, it offers a fascinating insight into Highland justice and community life.
As we head back to Inverness, reflect on the stories, landscapes, and wildlife that make the Black Isle such a special part of Scotland.
