Highland Adventure: Inverness to Speyside
Welcome, folks, to a grand Highland journey packed with history, stunning landscapes, and a wee taste of Scotland’s finest whisky! Today, we’ll explore the best of the Highlands and Moray, from the battlefield of Culloden to the grandeur of Brodie Castle, the historic town of Elgin, and the famous distilleries of Speyside. We’ll finish with a visit to the charming village of Carrbridge, home to Scotland’s oldest stone bridge. So, grab your camera and a sense of adventure—let’s get started!
We begin in Inverness, the vibrant capital of the Highlands. Nestled on the banks of the River Ness, this city is steeped in history, from its ancient castle to its connections with Bonnie Prince Charlie. As we head east, we’ll soon arrive at a place that played a pivotal role in Scotland’s past—Culloden Battlefield.
At Culloden, we stand on the site of the last pitched battle fought on British soil in 1746. It was here that the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie met its tragic end against the Duke of Cumberland’s forces. Walk among the battlefield’s stone markers, hear the stories of the fallen, and experience the powerful exhibits at the visitor centre—it’s a deeply moving stop on our journey.
Next, we travel to the stunning Brodie Castle, a 16th-century fortress that was home to the Brodie clan for centuries. With its grand rooms filled with fine art and antiques, this castle offers a glimpse into Scotland’s noble past. The surrounding gardens are a delight, especially in spring when the daffodils bloom in abundance.
From there, we head to Elgin, a town rich in medieval history. The highlight here is Elgin Cathedral, often called the ‘Lantern of the North.’ Even in ruins, this cathedral remains one of Scotland’s most breathtaking medieval structures. Take a wander through its towering arches and soak in its dramatic history.
No Highland tour would be complete without a dram of whisky, so we make our way into Speyside, Scotland’s premier whisky region. The region is home to some of the world’s best-known distilleries, including Glenfiddich, Cardhu, and Aberlour. We’ll stop at your distilleries of choice, where you’ll have the chance to learn about the whisky-making process and enjoy a tasting session of the finest single malts. I would advise one whisky tour and a couple of tastings at other stops on our route.
Finally, we round off our adventure in the quaint village of Carrbridge, famous for its Packhorse Bridge, the oldest stone bridge in Scotland. This picturesque village is the perfect place to reflect on our journey before heading back to Inverness.
