It's a Bike, It's a Boat, IT’S AN ECOTOUR!

A sea cycle is a fun and unique way to immerse yourself in Ketchikan’s intriguing history, geography and beauty. Designed for two people, the high-performance pontoon-style pedal boat offers hands-free operation so you can take photos of your picturesque surroundings.

This 2.5-hour tour is limited to just ten people, so you’ll have the luxury of having your guide all to yourself. Although you’ll be pedaling approximately 3.5 miles, it’s at a leisurely pace. To thoroughly enjoy your adventure be sure to wear warm, comfortable clothes and bring a camera and binoculars.

At the site of the former Ketchikan Pulp Company, learn its intriguing history and the important role it played in Southeast Alaska’s economy and gear up for your adventure.

After a safety briefing and instructions on how to use the sea cycle, you’ll step onboard and begin to pedal away. With your guide in the lead, you’ll head out onto the crystalline ocean waters. Soak up the serene seascape as you glide near the woods of the Tongass National Forest, the world’s largest temperate rainforest. Western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock line the shore while plants, seaweed, and sea stars live below in the tidal zone. Learn how Alaskans still subsist and harvest from the ocean and forest for food and medicine.

Keep your camera handy! At roughly 17 million acres, the Tongass is home to abundant wildlife. Watch the skies – you may see an eagle soaring overhead or guarding its active nest, and even some baby eagles. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the soft breeze on your face as you pedal along the cove with a curious seal or two accompanying your journey. Soon, you’ll find your way to a wildlife estuary, home to ducks and their ducklings, jellyfish, crabs, salmon and the occasional bear.

After exploring the estuary, you’ll make your way back into the dock to enjoy coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a cookie before return to your ship.
